Lenia Hauser

Lenia Hauser was born in Remscheid in 1989 and went on to study at the Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy in Halle/Saale, among other places. Her work is all about something that's easy to miss: The ground we walk on. Each painting looks like an overhead view and has a geographical trace that doesn't say whether it's a faraway or nearby place, a landscape, or even an organism. Her work draws inspiration from urban geography, including irregularly laid sidewalks and repaired streets, as well as natural rock formations, cycles, earth crusts, erosion, lava, and moss. The pieces painted on canvas or wood feature amorphous shapes that sometimes drift, sometimes stick to the background, and are reminiscent of jigsaw puzzles. The pieces are made up of lots of different materials (spray can, acrylic, oil pastel) and they're built up in layers. This forms the background for the floating elements that you can see. All of this works together as one big, living system, which gives the viewer the chance to "linger" and "wander around" at their own pace.
