Sebastian Herzau: The magic between the visible and the hidden
Sebastian Herzau is an outstanding contemporary artist. With masterful technique and a keen sense of atmosphere, he creates works that oscillate between illusion and reality. His paintings are more than images - they are poetic reflections on perception, memory and the hidden behind the visible.
Born in Schönebeck in 1980, Herzau studied art at the renowned Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy in Halle under Prof. Ute Pleuger, graduating in 2012. He now lives and works in Halle/Saale. He has received several awards, including the Halle Art Prize (2019), and exhibits his work in prestigious galleries in Germany. His work is also regularly represented at major art fairs such as Art Karlsruhe and POSITIONS Berlin.
Herzau's paintings oscillate between clarity and mystery. His figurative works appear realistic, but on closer inspection reveal a multi-layered depth. A recurring element is the veil, which gently shrouds motifs, bridging the visible and invisible. These transparencies create an almost magical aura - an invitation to look behind the surface.
Herzaus uses precise techniques to create illusions that challenge the eye and question the boundaries between reality and staging. His visual worlds are experimental, often infused with subtle humour that opens up additional levels of meaning.
Sebastian Herzau plays with perception, boundaries and expectations. His art shows that true beauty often lies not in the obvious, but in the nuances and hidden layers that the viewer discovers for himself.
