André Schulze: Contemporary Mastery Between Nostalgia and Irony

André Schulze, born in Dresden in 1982, has a unique visual language in his paintings. His work does not merely quote the past; it dissects, ironizes, and lovingly reassembles it. He is an artist who dusts off old masterpieces and breathes new life into them with subtle humor and technical brilliance.

André studied painting/graphics at the Dresden University of Fine Arts from 2006 - 2011, graduated with a diploma in 2011 and was a master student ("Meisterschüler") at the Dresden University of Fine Arts from 2011 - 2013 (Prof. Christian Macketanz).

As a trained painting restorer, he knows the inner workings of classical painting better than anyone. Instead of losing himself in tradition, however, Schulze transforms historical imagery into surprising contemporary narratives. His works engage in a fascinating dialogue with icons such as Caspar David Friedrich and Liotard's "Chocolate Girl," whose motifs he appropriates, exaggerates, and ultimately transforms.

He creates pictorial worlds of rare depth and contrast from quotations and fragments. Each of his series invites discovery. Not only is the motif significant, but also what lies between the lines. Irony, nostalgia, and melancholy are all subtly negotiated in his works.

The E30 Gallery in Frankfurt is proud to represent André Schulze and exhibit his paintings, which are narratively strong, technically flawless, and emotionally accessible.

His works are cultural statements that recognize the past, understand the present, and help shape the future.
