Reflections

"Reflections" showcases new works by Raphael Paulun (b. 1990). The exhibition primarily focuses on his self-portraits, which are characterized by a calm and focused visual language. Paulun consistently uses his own image in his work; he is present in all of his pieces and uses the self-portrait as a starting point for his artistic exploration.

The motifs arise from personal memories and inner processes of reflection. He repeatedly combines these with philosophical questions and art-historical references, subtly weaving them into the pictorial structure.

His paintings are characterized by a reduced color palette, precise composition, and deliberate engagement with the materiality of oil paint. The result is a body of work that aims for a quiet, lasting presence rather than immediate impact.

Paulun studied at Alanus University, where he was a master's student of Prof. Andreas Orosz. During this time, he developed an independent artistic voice combining precise observation and technical mastery. For Paulun, painting is a means of engagement with his own image, as well as with fundamental questions of perception and existence.
